This is a vast area south of the holy lake of the sami people, the Inari. Along the frontier with Russia, Saariselkä is famous for its langlauf trails and routes for ski-hiking. Next to the hotel-area begins the UK National Park* with mountains over 700 m. Snowmobiles are forbidden here, so if you are searching for silence and the relaxing athmosphere of Lapland this is your place! The slopes are fine for beginners, but the downhill expert goes other places. *(UK stays for Urho Kekkonen, the President of Finland 1956-81, who was a passionate cross-country skier and loved the Saariselkä-range).
